Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has launched its latest flagship AI model, Grok 3, alongside expanded capabilities for the Grok iOS and web applications.
Designed to compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini, Grok 3 features image analysis and question-answering abilities while powering various features on Musk’s social media platform, X.
Initially expected later in 2024, Grok 3 was delayed but is officially rolling out. It was developed using a massive data center in Memphis equipped with approximately 200,000 GPUs, significantly increasing its training power.

Musk claims (via TechCrunch) Grok 3 was trained with ten times the computing power of Grok 2, incorporating an expanded dataset that includes court filings.
He describes it as “maximally truth-seeking,” even if its responses challenge political correctness.
The Grok 3 release includes multiple model variants, including the Grok 3 mini, which prioritizes speed over accuracy. While not all features are available immediately, several began rolling out on Monday, February 17.
xAI, the company behind Grok, asserts that Grok 3 outperforms GPT-4o in benchmarks like AIME (math problem-solving) and GPQA (PhD-level science questions). Additionally, it has scored competitively in Chatbot Arena, a crowdsourced AI evaluation platform.
Moreover, two specialized versions, Grok 3 Reasoning and Grok 3 mini Reasoning, are designed for complex problem-solving. They aim to fact-check themselves before responding.
These reasoning models reportedly surpass OpenAI’s o3-mini-high on benchmarks like AIME 2025.
Users can engage these models through the Grok app by selecting the “Think” option or activating the “Big Brain” mode for improved logic.
Besides this, a new feature, DeepSearch, scans the internet and X for research-oriented responses, positioning Grok 3 as a competitor to OpenAI’s deep research tools.
X increases the price of its Premium+ plans
Access to Grok 3 is currently limited to X’s Premium+ subscribers ($50/month), with additional features locked behind a SuperGrok plan ($30/month or $300/year). SuperGrok offers more reasoning queries, DeepSearch access, and unlimited image generation.
Future updates include a voice mode for synthesized speech and an enterprise API release.
xAI also plans to open-source Grok 2 once Grok 3 is stable enough to be let go for developtment tweaks. While Musk initially marketed Grok as politically unfiltered, prior versions exhibited a left-leaning bias, which xAI aims to neutralize.
Meanwhile, X has increased Premium+ pricing to $50/month, with inconsistencies in displayed subscription rates, ranging between $39.83 and $48.40 per month. (via TechCrunch)
