Google Enhances Data Privacy with Confidential Federated Analytics

Google has announced Confidential Federated Analytics (CFA), a technique designed to increase transparency in data processing while maintaining privacy. Building on federated analytics, CFA leverages confidential computing to ensure that only predefined and inspectable computations are performed on user data without exposing raw data to servers or engineers. Federated analytics allows for distributed data analysis while keeping raw data on user devices. Traditionally, devices respond to queries by sending aggregated statistics rather than individual data points. However, users have had no way to verify how their data is being processed, which presents trust and security challenges. CFA addresses this limitation

North Korean Lazarus hackers infect hundreds via npm packages

Six malicious packages have been identified on npm (Node package manager) linked to the notorious North Korean hacking group Lazarus. The packages, which have been downloaded 330 times, are designed to steal account credentials, deploy backdoors on compromised systems, and extract sensitive cryptocurrency information. The Socket Research Team discovered the campaign, which linked it to previously known Lazarus supply chain operations. The threat group is known for pushing malicious packages into software registries like npm, which is used by millions of JavaScript developers, and compromising systems passively. Similar campaigns attributed to the same threat actors have been spotted on GitHub and

Global smartwatch shipments dipped 7% in 2024, marking first annual decline

In brief: Global shipments of smartwatches dropped seven percent in 2024, marking the first annual decline for the wearables category. Apple maintained its position as the leading manufacturer, but shipped 19 percent fewer devices than it did a year earlier. According to Counterpoint senior research analyst Anshika Jain, Apple Watch experienced a decline in its 10th year on the market thanks in part to minimal feature upgrades in the Series 10 lineup, the lack of an Ultra 3 model, and the fact that there hasn’t been a new SE model introduced since 2022. Most assume Apple passed on an Ultra

I Won’t Use AI Smart Health Features for My Own Sake. Here’s Why

A few years ago, I was convinced I was about to die. And while (spoiler alert) I didn’t, my severe health anxiety and ability to always assume the worst has persisted. But the increase of health tracking smart devices and new ways that AI tries to make sense of our body’s data has led me to make an important decision. For my own peace of mind, AI needs to stay far away from my personal health. After Samsung’s January Unpacked event, I’m more convinced of this than ever. I’ll explain. Sometime around 2016, I had severe migraines that persisted for

The creators of the Las Vegas Sphere want to open smaller mini-Spheres

Although original estimates set the cost of the Las Vegas Sphere at $1.2 billion, Sphere Entertainment eventually spent around $2.3 billion to build the interactive venue. As the company looks to expand to other cities, it’s also looking to scale down the venue, making it more affordable to build and operate. Sphere Entertainment is currently working on a design for mini-Spheres with a capacity of about 5,000 people, the company’s Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, James Dolan, told analysts during an investment call, according to a report by AV Magazine. The Las Vegas Sphere can seat 17,600 people, but
