I teach a lot of international students about the US education system and our schools. Whenever they go into our schools for the first time, one of the things that always shocks them is the school car pickup traffic lines. While the internet hangs onto every casting announcement for the Marvel Cinematic Universe for narrative speculation, it turns out the truth behind who gets to be in the next big tentpole might be a little less exciting. Visual Feature Learning Without Supervision

The field of computer vision is experiencing an increase in foundation models, similar to those in natural language processing (NLP). These models aim to produce general-purpose visual features that we can apply across various image distributions and tasks without the need for fine-tuning. The recent success of unsupervised learning in NLP pushed the way for similar advancements in computer vision.
