Yi-34B, Llama 2, and common practices in LLM training: a fact check of the New York Times

On February 21 2024, the New York Times published “China’s Rush to Dominate A.I. Comes With a Twist: It Depends on U.S. Technology.” The authors claim that Yi-34B, a recent large language model by the Chinese startup 01.AI, is fundamentally indebted to Meta’s Llama 2: There was just one twist: Some of the technology in 01.AI’s system came from Llama. OpenAI and Google call for US government action to secure AI lead

OpenAI and Google are each urging the US government to take decisive action to secure the nation’s AI leadership. “As America’s world-leading AI sector approaches AGI, with a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) determined to overtake us by 2030, the Trump Administration’s new AI Action Plan can ensure that American-led AI built on democratic principles continues to prevail over CCP-built autocratic, authoritarian AI,” wrote OpenAI, in a letter to the Office of Science and Technology Policy. T-Mobile is hiking prices on its prized legacy plans

T-Mobile has begun another wave of price hikes, this time hitting customers with legacy plans. A leaked memo obtained by CNET prepared the Internet for the price hikes. Google’s research on quantum error correction

Quantum computers have the potential to revolutionize drug discovery, material design and fundamental physics — that is, if we can get them to work reliably. Certain problems, which would take a conventional computer billions of years to solve, would take a quantum computer just hours. However, these new processors are more prone to noise than conventional ones. If we want to make quantum computers more reliable, especially at scale, we need to accurately identify and correct these errors. Step-by-step reasoning can fix madman logic in vision AI

Vision AI models have a flaw. When shown a medical scan, they might correctly diagnose a condition while citing anatomically impossible reasons. Or they might solve a geometry problem with the right answer but skip essential theorems and rely on made-up ones instead. These models reach correct conclusions through reasoning that makes no sense. This hints at a deeper problem. Current models don’t really think through visual problems – they pattern match their way to answers.
