OpenAI has upped the competition in AI-powered search by removing the login requirement for ChatGPT’s search engine.
Initially launched in October for paid subscribers and later expanded in December to all registered users, ChatGPT’s AI-driven search is now freely available to anyone, with no account required.
This update, announced on Wednesday, puts OpenAI’s search offering directly in competition with Google Search and Bing, making ChatGPT a formidable player in the search market.
ChatGPT search drops sign-in requirement
The improved ChatGPT search feature allows users to receive AI-generated results with source citations, making it a reliable alternative to traditional search engines.
Unlike conventional search models prioritizing ranked webpages, ChatGPT delivers summarized responses in a conversational format, eliminating the need for users to sift through multiple links.
Additionally, the AI can now display maps, images, local attraction guides, recipes, and other contextual information, making it a comprehensive and ad-free alternative to traditional search engines.
Despite these advancements, OpenAI is not the first AI-powered search engine to remove login restrictions.
Perplexity, another AI-driven search platform, already provides account-free access to web searches and has recently integrated TripAdvisor’s hotel listings and ratings, positioning itself as a competitor in the AI search landscape.
However, according to BrightEdge data, ChatGPT maintains a dominant presence, holding six times the market share of Perplexity. (via AndroidPolice)
Google, meanwhile, continues to refine its AI search capabilities.
Its Gemini AI provides conversational summaries alongside traditional search results, creating a hybrid model that blends AI insights with familiar webpage listings.
While ChatGPT’s search market share is projected to reach 1 percent by the end of 2025, Google remains the undisputed leader with 92 percent market dominance, followed by Bing at just over 4 percent.
Whether ChatGPT can truly challenge Google’s dominance remains uncertain. However, OpenAI’s rapid expansion and aggressive strategy signal its intent to disrupt the traditional search experience.
